I was born in Victoria, B.C., and have lived in the U.K. (as a child), Montreal, Toronto, and Tokyo. In addition to obtaining three Canadian academic degrees in literature and law, I graduated from CoachInc., a leading coach-training institution in the U.S., in 2003.
My focus in corporate coaching is on small businesses. In particular, I enjoy helping entrepreneurs begin to wear a “CEO hat” and to take a leadership perspective in their own company. Clients begin to delegate tight control of the day-to-day operations which they have loved from “day one”, and to find satisfaction in having a broader view of the present and the future.
In personal coaching, I love using language and image to help the client set aside his or her fear and self-imposed limitations. I try to listen to each client well enough to find a way of looking at things that works. It’s a matter of using (with the client) metaphors and rituals that mean something for him or her. I invite the clients to look forward, not back, never denying the past but never allowing it to dominate.
I try to help the client achieve results. The outcome, not the process, is the goal. In that sense, I prefer to coach someone for one session with a good result than for three months with little progress. The journey together can be scary and exciting but it must be undertaken and its challenges engaged; this is the perspective I invite clients to share.
